US President Donald Trump said he expects to reduce fentanyl-related tariffs on China ahead of a highly anticipated meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in South Korea.
The flow of fentanyl into the United States and “farmers” will be among the issues he expects to discuss with Xi on Thursday, the president told reporters aboard Air Force One on Wednesday.
Asked whether a potential one-year pause on Beijing’s imposition of rare earth export controls would be enough to win more concessions from the United States, Trump said: “We haven’t talked about timing yet, but we’ll be working on something.”
The comments came after the Wall Street Journal reportedtuesday report In exchange for Beijing’s crackdown on exports of fentanyl-making chemicals, the U.S. could halve its 20% fentanyl-related tariffs on Chinese exports.
Trump described relations with China as “very good” and said, “We will have a great meeting with China’s Xi.”
