Luxury homes with period charm we love
If these walls could talk, the saying goes. All houses have a history, but period homes have formed the backdrop to generations of residents’ lives, from significant family moments to daily ups and downs.
Many homeowners have seized the opportunity to put their own stamp on interiors and update them for modern living, whether it’s kitchens equipped to host, gathering spaces or solar panel and battery systems. Here are five of our favorites.
76 Park Road, Central Park VIC
This brick Victorian home has street appeal framed by a well-kept hedge. Inside, it’s calm and bright, thanks to a revamp by lauded Kennedy Nolan Architects. The living space has clean lines, a neutral palette and floor-to-ceiling glass, but intricate period details such as the fireplace in one of the bedrooms have been retained. There is a grassy backyard and outdoor dining area.
104 Kurraba Road, Neutral Bay NSW
This six-bedroom Victorian house, with beautiful iron lace front and back, dates back to about 1888. There are patterned high ceilings as well as sculptural fireplaces and decorative cornices. The delightful backyard is framed by flowers and dappled with sunlight filtering through the trees.
3 Madeline Street, Hunters Hill NSW
This large 1484 square meter block includes a house consisting of two sandstone cottages; perhaps for modern families who appreciate historic properties. High ceilings are crowned with ceiling roses and large windows offer views of the tidy lawn. There are also mod cons, including solar panels and home batteries.
58 Tivoli Road, South Yarra VIC
This double-fronted Victorian house is hidden from the street by a tall hedge with a gate inside, as if visitors were entering. The Secret Garden. The facade is framed with more greenery around iron lace, but the interiors have been renovated, including a marble and stainless steel kitchen. The outdoor dining area here will be a delight in any season.
49 Reading Street, Paddington QLD
This house in Brisbane dates from the 1860s but its interior has received a contemporary overhaul, including a circular staircase and the dramatic use of green marble in the kitchen, dressing room, bathroom and bar. Relaxing inside or on the terrace, residents can enjoy city views framed by the elegant arches on the front of the house. Using color soaks adds interest to the home office and gym.
