Trump Slaps Additional 10% Tariffs On Canada Over Ad Dispute | World News

US President Donald Trump accused Canada of publishing a “fraudulent advertisement” following former President Ronald Reagan’s speech on taxes and imposed an additional 10 percent customs duty on Canada.

In a post on Truth Social late Saturday, Trump wrote: “Their ad was to be removed IMMEDIATELY, but they allowed it to run last night during the World Series knowing it was a FRAUD. Due to their serious misrepresentation of facts and hostile behavior, I am increasing Tariffs in Canada by 10 percent over what they are currently paying.”

The US President once again accused Canada of trying to interfere with a decision by the US Supreme Court, which is currently reviewing legal challenges to the tariff measures.

“The sole purpose of this FRAUD was Canada’s hope that the United States Supreme Court would come to ‘rescue’ them on the Tariffs they have been using to harm the United States for years,” he added.

Following Trump’s dissent on Thursday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he would stop airing the anti-tariff ad starting Monday so “trade talks can continue.”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Friday that his government was ready to continue “constructive discussions” with the United States after the President announced an abrupt end to trade talks between the two countries.

“For months we’ve been emphasizing the importance of separating the things we can control from the things we can’t,” Carney said before leaving for Malaysia for the ASEAN Summit. he said.

“We cannot control the trade policy of the United States. We recognize that policy has changed fundamentally from policy in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s.”

Carney noted that Canadian negotiators have made “a lot of progress” in talks with their U.S. counterparts, particularly on key sectors such as steel, aluminum and energy.

“Our officials are working on detailed, constructive discussions with their American counterparts. We are ready to seize and build on that progress when the Americans are ready to have those discussions,” he added.

Carney’s remarks came just hours after President Trump said late Thursday he was ending all trade talks with Canada, citing a recent video ad produced by the Ontario provincial government.

The ad featured archival footage of former US President Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs; These images were images that Trump described as “fake”.

“Tariffs are CRUCIAL TO THE NATIONAL SECURITY AND ECONOMY OF THE USA,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“Due to their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED.”

White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said Friday that the decision reflects the President’s “frustration” over trade negotiations with Canadians.

“I think the president is very frustrated about Canada, and he has every right to be that way,” Hassett told Fox News, adding that Canadian negotiators “were very difficult to negotiate with” and that “his frustration grew over time.”

The latest dispute adds new uncertainty to one of the world’s largest bilateral trade relationships.

Trump has imposed 35 percent tariffs on some Canadian exports and has repeatedly suggested Canada should become the 51st state of the United States.
