Donald Trump declared a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.

The ceasefire was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin during World War II of the Soviet Union. It comes as Moscow prepares a huge celebration this weekend to celebrate victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

“I am pleased to announce that there will be a three-day (May 9, 10, and 11) ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

‘The celebrations in Russia are for Victory Day, but they are celebrated in the same way in Ukraine because they were also a big part and factor of the Second World War.’

The president stated that the ceasefire would halt all military operations and include the exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each country. Russia is reportedly holding more than 7,000 Ukrainian soldiers as prisoners of war, while Ukraine has captured 4,000 Russians.

“This request was made directly by me, and I greatly appreciate the agreement of President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to this effect,” Trump added.

Trump stated that he hoped that the ceasefire would help bring a final end to a “very long, deadly” war and said, “Talks to end this major conflict, the largest since World War II, continue and we are getting closer every day.”

Last week, Trump told reporters that he had raised the possibility of a ceasefire in a 90-minute private phone call with Putin, but nothing was confirmed at the time.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is currently visiting Russia to attend celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, known as the Great Patriotic War.

Xi’s arrival comes just days before he is expected to welcome Trump to Beijing for a highly anticipated summit between the two world leaders.

Several national leaders are expected to attend Putin’s celebration, including the presidents of Brazil and Serbia and the prime minister of Slovakia.

Putin offered Ukraine a three-day ceasefire earlier this week, but received a cold response from Ukraine.

Zelensky said he would accept a ceasefire only as long as it lasts 30 days.

He then went further, claiming that Ukraine could not guarantee the safety of foreign dignitaries coming to Moscow for the traditional May 9 victory parade.

However, after Trump’s statement, it appears that Ukraine has bowed to Russia’s demands following the President’s intervention.

The human toll made this the bloodiest conflict in Europe since World War II, with more than 1.2 million Russian casualties and more than 600,000 Ukrainians killed or wounded.

During the 2024 campaign, Trump promised to end the Russia-Ukraine war within 24 hours of taking office.

15 months before the end of his term, despite many diplomatic summits, there is still no clear result in sight.
