Trump’s plan for a triumphal arch in the nation’s capital is getting another review

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s plans to build a the arch that changes the horizon Another review is underway in the nation’s capital from the federal commission, whose approval it needs, but agency staff say the project must be revised without approval.

The National Capital Planning Commission is meeting Thursday, and the Republican president’s proposed 76-foot arch is one of the items on the agenda.

Inside a reportThe agency’s staff recommends that the commission approve preliminary site and construction plans for the arch. But staff also recommends adjusting the design to comply with federal law that limits building heights in downtown Washington to preserve the city’s famous skyline. The planning commission applies the law during the approval process.

“Staff recommended that the Commission request that the applicant revise the project design to comply with the Height of Buildings Act and return to the NCPC for final approval,” the 185-page report said. The statement is included.

Implementing the law “will require design revisions to redistribute height between the main structure, habitable roof structure, and statues,” the report said. But even with the proposed revisions, the arch, a public observation deck and three gilded-crested statues would still reach Trump’s desired 250-foot height, the report said.

Staff also recommends that commissioners seek additional information about vehicle traffic around the arch, the proposed granite exterior and other aspects of the project before the Interior Department, which oversees the park service, returns for final approval. Trump wants to build the arch over a traffic interchange on the Virginia side of the Memorial Bridge in the District of Columbia.

The U.S. Commission on Fine Arts, a separate federal agency, approved the design For the belt in May. The National Capital Planning Commission oversees construction on federal lands in the city and Began reviewing the belt plan in June.

Opponents of the project argue that the arch is too large for the skyline and would disrupt the carefully designed vistas between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery that symbolize the reunification of North and South after the Civil War.

But the opposition did little to sway members of both commissions, which include some of Trump’s closest allies. Trump appointed Will ScharfA senior White House aide who will lead the planning commission.

A group of veterans and a historian sued the Trump administration in federal court to block construction of the arch due to line-of-sight disruptions.

The arch would be more than twice as tall as the Lincoln Memorial, which is 99 feet (30 meters) tall, and nearly half the height of the Washington Monument, which is about 555 feet (169 meters) tall.

Trump said last year that the arch could be paid for with unused funds from the hundreds of millions of dollars he said he had raised from corporations, donors and other wealthy people to build a new world. 400 million dollar ballroom In the White House.

However, it appears that some public money will be used for the ballroom project as well as the arch. The White House has not released a cost estimate for the arch.
