Two major state capitals to be linked by THIS new 600 km expressway

According to officials, the Lucknow-Bhopal expressway will be built along the Yamuna Expressway and there are plans to connect it from Lucknow to Kanpur via a two-lane highway and expressway.

Plans are underway to build a new highway connecting the capitals of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, Lucknow and Bhopal. Once completed, this major infrastructure project will significantly reduce travel time between the two cities and improve road connectivity across central India.

Currently, the nearly 600-kilometre journey from Lucknow to Bhopal takes around 14 to 15 hours by road. However, with the construction of the new highway, the same journey is expected to take approximately seven hours and offer passengers a faster and smoother travel experience.

According to initial reports, the Lucknow-Bhopal Expressway will connect to three major highways, each consisting of four to six lanes. Construction work has already started on various sections of these routes.

The highway project is being developed in three parts:

  • Kanpur-Kabrai Highway
  • Kabrai-Sagar Highway
  • Sagar-Bhopal Highway

These routes together will form a continuous high-speed corridor connecting Lucknow and Bhopal via Bundelkhand.

A 124-kilometer expressway is currently being constructed to connect the Naubasta Kanpur-Kabrai line; this includes a ring road in Kabrai that will divert traffic away from residential areas. Another 245-kilometer four-lane highway will be constructed from Kabrai to Sagar, while a 150-kilometer section will extend from Sagar to Bhopal.

The highway will pass through many important areas such as Kanpur city, Kanpur Dehat, Hamirpur and Mahoba, providing better regional connectivity. The project is also expected to boost economic development in Bundelkhand by improving access between the two states.

Modeled after the Yamuna Expressway, the Lucknow-Bhopal Expressway will integrate with the existing Lucknow-Kanpur four-lane highway and provide a seamless route for long-distance commuters.

Work on this ambitious four- to six-lane highway has been ongoing for the last five years. The total cost of the project is estimated to be around Rs 11,000 million.

Once completed, the Lucknow-Bhopal Expressway is expected to become an important link between north and central India, boosting trade, tourism and regional development.
