UK will not have to pay Rwanda more than £100m over failed asylum deal

Britain will not have to pay millions of pounds to Rwanda over its failed immigration deportation deal, a court has ruled.

The Hague Court of Arbitration previously heard how Sir Keir Starmer boldly promised on his first day in office in July 2024 that the Rwanda plan was “dead and buried”, but the government failed to abandon the deal by December 2025.

Rwanda told the Dutch court this meant it owed £100 million in payments promised under the deal and also wanted a further £6 million in compensation for Britain’s failure to accept vulnerable refugees.

The country argued that Britain should accept 300 refugees and likened this approach to a one-for-one agreement with France.

This is breaking news, more to come…
