Ukraine uses new medium range drones The plan is to attack key bridges feeding Russia’s rear forces from the south, and battlefield images show this tactic causing serious damage.
The country’s 1st Separate Assault Regiment said it carried out attacks last week in the Armyansk, Henichesk and Chonhar regions, three crossing points between Crimea and the southern front.
Located 50 to 75 miles from the front lines, the bridges in these areas are critical to the Kremlin’s logistics routes to the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.
In various social media posts over the past five days, the 1st Separate Assault Regiment has released first-person view drone footage showing uncrewed systems repeatedly flying into the surface of the bridge from above. It was stated that some of the attacks were coordinated with the 475th Assault Regiment and the Security Service of Ukraine’s elite Alpha unit.
“The only means of transporting Russian soldiers, ammunition and fuel from temporarily occupied Crimea was attacked,” the brigade wrote.
The regiment said it used two types of weapons medium range drones: FirePoint FP-2, which has a wingspan of 18 feet and carries a 220-pound explosive payload, and Hippo, which has a wingspan of 7.5 feet and carries a 77-pound thermobaric payload as well as 88 pounds of explosives.
Many of the clips show at least two bridges on fire and their structures severely damaged in some areas. Business Insider could not independently verify the authenticity of the images.
However, pro-Russian officials in the region confirmed the attacks. Kremlin-appointed Kherson governor Vladimir Saldo said on Thursday that bridges in the Armyansk region were attacked by at least 45 drone strikes.
In his update, Saldo said, “According to preliminary reports, some damage has occurred. Experts are examining and assessing the condition of the structures.” he wrote.
On Tuesday, Saldo also warned of about 20 drone attacks on the bridge serving Chonhar and said traffic there was closed.
His office then began recommending alternative traffic routes to avoid areas affected by the attacks, saying civilian passenger buses in the area would be stopped due to fuel shortages.
Medium-range drones are a new rising star in Ukraine’s offensive options, allowing it to attack Russian rear areas and harass the region. Kremlin’s critical supply lines. In recent years, Ukraine has damaged Russia’s supply bridges, relying heavily on sabotage or artillery systems. USA made HIMARS.
These drones fly farther and hit harder than typical grenade-carrying quadcopters, but are cheaper to produce than the long-range drones Ukraine has used to attack Russia’s military-industrial base.
