UK’s cheapest supermarket revealed for Christmas shoppers

As the cost of the weekly food shop continues to rise, shoppers are more keen than ever to make sure they’re getting the best value for their money this Christmas.

To help households decide where to buy essentials this festive season, consumer group Which? It continues its ongoing analysis of the UK’s cheapest supermarkets, revealing the best value retailers each month.

November data shows the race for the most valuable stores is heating up, with Aldi once again taking the top spot after being dethroned by Lidl last month.

The supermarket was £1.13 cheaper than other discounters this month; With its loyalty discount it’s £121.22 this month, compared to Lidl’s £122.35.

Which? Calculates the store’s cost by looking at a list of 70 items for the month.

New figures show how tight the race is for budget retailers who continue to give UK shoppers the best value for money.

While the two supermarkets fought for first place, the competition between other competitors also intensified. Tesco, which has long been in third place, has moved ahead of Asda for the second straight month, even when using its popular Clubcard.

The shopping list at Asda costs £133.59, which is 66p (£133.65) cheaper than Tesco with Clubcard.

This was followed by Morrisons (£137.40), Sainsbury’s (£137.77 with loyalty discount) and Ocado (£154.37).

Waitrose was the most expensive store on average; shop price was £166.79; Compared to Asda there was a difference of £33.39.

Reena Sewraz, Which One? Retail Editor said: “Although Aldi is this month’s cheapest supermarket, discounters who offer discounts every month mean shopping at Lidl is also a great money-saving option, according to our latest price analysis.

“The long list of groceries shows that Asda remains one of the UK’s cheapest supermarkets and is a good option for those looking to choose from a wider selection of branded goods.

“With Christmas just a few weeks away, food prices will be a concern for many households, but our analysis shows it pays to shop around – simply choosing one supermarket over another could save you 27 per cent.”
