Umpires in Nationals-Mets game seemingly forget the rules, causing extra-innings delay

Baseball is a game of rules. Written rules, unwritten rules, you name it.
It seems like there are so many rules in the game of baseball that it can be difficult to remember them all, unless knowing them like the back of your hand is your thing.
Speaking of which, the New York Mets and Washington Nationals had a strange game on Monday night; The Mets scored 10 runs in the top of the 12th inning to win by a ridiculous score of 16-7 in extra time.

It was the most points scored in an extra inning in over 40 years, but that might not even have been the craziest part of the game.
During this offensive blitz, the Nationals decided they were tired of watching their pitchers take the bullet and called in a position player to pick up the rubber.
The umpires appeared ready to lay down the law as the Mets led by less than the eight-run lead required for the losing team to put a position player on the mound, but there was just one problem: the eight-run rule does not apply to extra innings.

Full disclosure, I wasn’t very familiar with the rules regarding position players taking the field, but I also don’t get paid by Major League Baseball to enforce the rules, so this is a terrible look for umpires.
Look how long it took them to fix this!
They even had to call headquarters again to get clarification on the rule. How long might this take?

The guys in the broadcast booth managed to come up with the rules in a quarter of the time it took the umps to clarify.
You can see the embarrassment on the referee’s face and voice as he declares, yes, Washington. to be Bring in a position player who will actually step on the field.

A game that was already running longer than usual due to extra innings and the Mets taking a sledgehammer to the Nationals was made even longer thanks to confusion by this group of umpires.
I’m sure everyone wanted to go home at that point instead of watching a bunch of guys in gray pants put their fingers in their ears for another five minutes.

People in the comments section on X were definitely letting both the umps and MLB have it.
Actually, it’s not a good look.

The best part about all of this is that this is only game one of the series and it’s a four-game set, so it’ll be interesting to see what this team of referees have in store for a replay.

One thing is for sure, they will probably do a lot of homework this afternoon to avoid another incident like this.
