‘United King Don’ and ‘PM battles to block sleaze vote’
King III. The official visit of Charles and Queen Camilla to the USA is on the agenda of Tuesday’s newspapers. The Times’ top image shows the King and Queen being welcomed to the White House by US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. The newspaper previews the speech that the King will later give to the US Congress, saying that he will give a “message of unity” and remind Washington of the common “democratic, legal and social” values of the two countries. Elsewhere, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is trying to drum up support ahead of a crucial House of Commons vote on whether to launch a parliamentary inquiry into claims about scrutiny of Lord Mandelson, the Times reports.
The Daily Telegraph said, “Starmer is begging MPs to save him” and said that the Prime Minister told Labor Party MPs at a meeting that Tuesday’s vote was “pure political play” by the opposition who want to “bring us down”. The paper also offers more details about the King’s speech to the US Congress, reporting that he will call on the US and UK to “come together” and reference Ukraine, the Middle East and the Aukus defense pact.
