US will limit number of refugees to 7,500 and give priority to white South Africans | US immigration

The Trump administration will limit the number of refugees it will accept into the United States next year to just 7,500, and those spots will be filled mostly by white South Africans.
The low figure represents a dramatic decline after the United States previously accepted hundreds of thousands of people fleeing war and persecution from around the world.
The administration broke the news in a notice published in the Federal Register on Thursday.
No reason was given for the drop in numbers, which was a significant drop from the 125,000-person cap set last year under the Biden administration.
The Associated Press had previously reported that the administration was considering accepting as few as 7,500 refugees, mostly white South Africans.
The government memo said the admission of 7,500 refugees in fiscal year 2026 alone was “justified by humanitarian considerations or otherwise in the national interest.”
This figure was previously announced after documents regarding the plans were leaked.
