Vice President J.D. Vance sidestepped questions about a possible 2028 Republican nomination with Secretary of State Marco Rubio after President Donald Trump singled out the duo as a political force earlier this week.

“I love Marco. I think he’s a great secretary of state. He’s been a very, very dear friend. But I think we’re both very focused on doing the job for the American people right now,” Vance said Wednesday at a news conference focused on the administration’s fight against corruption.

Trump floated a possible ticket with Vance and Rubio earlier this week, but the president did not say who would replace him. Vance said the media was creating a “conflict” when asked about the alleged tension between the two in Washington DC in recent months as the two move closer to 2028.

“Who likes J.D. Vance? Who likes Marco Rubio? All right. Sounds like a good ticket,” Trump said Monday, adding, “By the way, I believe this is a dream team.”

Vance shared that this is one of his least favorite topics to discuss, “while I’m having a good time and trying to do good work at what the American people have already elected me to do.”

Referring to himself, Vance said, “If I were the American people, there are few things I would hate more than a person who hasn’t been in an office for a year and a half and is looking for a job after two and a half years.”

During the press conference, a second reporter said the media did not support the 2028 tension between the two because the president directly announced the potential punishment.

In response, Vance humorously said, “I don’t think it sounds very good for the president of the United States to have a televised contest to see who can succeed him as his apprentice.” “I don’t think that’s what you would expect the president to do.”

Vance added that Trump’s banter with him and Rubio was “natural” and that the president “has always been fascinated by politics.”
