AOC triples down, claims American Revolution was against ‘the billionaires of their time’
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-CortezDY tripled down on his criticism of billionaires on Friday, claiming the American Revolution was fought against the “billionaires of their time.”
“I want to talk about how this fits into the legacy of our country, because America was founded… You look at Thomas Jefferson writing to Madison to rebel against the British aristocracy,” Ocasio-Cortez said at the University of Chicago. “You can’t make a billion dollars,” Ocasio-Cortez said Thursday. “You can gain market power. You can break the rules. You can do all kinds of things. You can abuse labor laws. You can pay people less than they’re worth. But you can’t earn that, right? And so you have to create a myth… you have to create a myth of gaining it.”
Regarding the backlash, Ocasio-Cortez accused critics of pushing a “red herring” by assuming she believes all billionaires are immoral rather than focusing on the “immorality” of income inequality.
“They like to talk about American values as if it’s an attack on American values, an attack on our idea of success. And first of all, call me crazy, but I don’t think every American aspires to be a billionaire. They may not object to our idea of success, but I don’t think that’s the universal American ideal,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

Ocasio-Cortez’s comments were again criticized by conservatives, who noted that many wealthy citizens, including George Washington, helped lead and finance the American Revolution against the British government, not the aristocracy.
“No, AOC, the American Revolution was NOT ‘against the billionaires of their time.’ “This was against a large, aloof, and overly interventionist government that had no limits on its own authority to tax, regulate, and consume the goods of the citizens it claimed to serve,” wrote Utah Senator Mike Lee.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz commented, “If a 9th grader writes this on his history test, he gets an F. It was literally a revolution against an oppressive GOVERNMENT… that’s what the @aoc wanted us all to experience. And the Revolution was financed by American free enterprise… the ‘billionaires’ of the time.”
“Oh, while George Washington wasn’t the richest man in the colonies, he was pretty close,” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis wrote.

“The biggest form of theft in America is wage theft. $50 billion a year is stolen from American workers,” he wrote. “Some people are angry that I’m pointing this out. That’s their job. Let them call me shrill, stupid, inexperienced, girly, uneducated – these people will say anything to distract from or highlight the fact that working people are being ripped off, and giving people a fair shake means we need to have an adult conversation about ruling out abuse of power.”
