Venezuela’s Allies Strongly Condemn US Attack

Bogotá: Venezuela’s neighbors and allies of President Nicolas Maduro on Saturday condemned a massive US attack on the South American country after Spain offered to mediate a peaceful solution.

US President Donald Trump had previously said US forces captured Maduro and took him and his wife out of the country.

The Venezuelan government condemned the attack, calling it an “extremely serious military aggression” by Washington, and declared a state of emergency after many leaders allied with Caracas condemned the US action.

Iranian

Iran, which has close ties to oil-rich Venezuela, said it “strongly condemns the US military attack on Venezuela and the blatant violation of the country’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Colombia

Colombian President Gustavo Petro called it an “attack on the sovereignty” of Latin America that would lead to a humanitarian crisis.

Colombia became a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council this year, and leftist leader Petro called for the council to meet “immediately”.

Cuba

Cuba, a traditional regional ally, condemned what it called “state terrorism against the brave Venezuelan people,” according to a statement from President Miguel Diaz-Canel, who called for “a response from the international community” following a “criminal attack” on Caracas.

Russia

Russia condemned the US military action as “an act of armed aggression against Venezuela”.

“This is an extremely alarming and condemnable situation,” the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement. he said. “The excuses used to legitimize such actions are untenable. Ideological hostility prevailed over commercial pragmatism,” the statement added.

Spain

Spain has offered to mediate the crisis with the aim of brokering a negotiated and peaceful solution.

“Spain calls for de-escalation and restraint,” the foreign ministry said in a statement, adding that it was “ready to assist in the search for a democratic, negotiated and peaceful solution for the country.”

Germany

Germany’s foreign ministry told AFP: “We are following the situation in Venezuela very closely and the latest reports with great concern. The foreign ministry is in close contact with the embassy in Caracas.”

Berlin added that the government’s crisis team was in session and “we are in close coordination with our partners.”

Italy

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s office said she was “closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela, as well as remaining in constant contact with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani to collect information about our citizens.”
