Victoria fires: WA firefighters put up their hands to help as Victoria declares a fire disaster

Western Australia is lending a helping hand by sending firefighters to Victoria’s fire zone as authorities confirm nearly 300 homes and buildings have been destroyed.
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan warned the state was not yet “through the worst”, with 32 active fires still burning and several evacuation orders issued on Sunday.
Emergency warnings are in place for towns surrounding the out-of-control Walwa, Cape Otways and Longwood fires amid fears conditions could worsen during the day.
Anthony Albanese activated disaster recovery payments even as the firefight continued.
“We are behind you,” the Prime Minister said on Sunday.
“What we are doing now is to provide this support where there is urgent need, to provide this support, $1000 payment, $400 payment for each child, emergency feed support for the agricultural sector.
“But this is initial support. We will provide whatever is necessary.”
A WA contingent of 20 firefighters, a task force leader and a 17-member incident management team flew out from Perth early on Sunday morning for a seven-day mission to assist Victorian crews.
They were responding to an SOS request from Emergency Management Victoria.
“Resource sharing is critical when natural disasters occur, and we can provide support as needed through our expert teams.
“DFES and DBCA’s WA emergency services professionals are exceptional people who are dedicated and committed to protecting communities affected by bushfires of this magnitude.
“They are recognized across Australia for their expertise and will provide valuable additional resources to assist Victorian crews during these challenging times.”

Emergency Services Minister Paul Papalia said WA was ready and able to help.
“Victorians are in danger and West Australians are stepping forward to help. It’s really encouraging,” he said.
“These people are the best of Western Australians who have stepped forward without notice to go to the other side of the country to help their fellow citizens and women in times of need.”
