Why can’t Vaibhav Suryavanshi represent India yet? Everything you need to know about ICC rules

Young batting maestro Vaibhav Suryavanshi is not yet eligible to represent India at the international level. Here’s everything you need to know about the ICC’s age, eligibility rules and why the young prodigy should wait before donning the India jersey.

When you hear the name Vaibhav Suryavanshi, you probably think of his wild run in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Under-19 Asia Cup. His IPL moments and India U-19 performances have already created a lot of buzz. At just 14 years old, people are calling him India’s next cricket sensation. Here’s the strange part: Despite hundreds of record-breaking players, Vaibhav is yet to play for the national team. Voters aren’t ignoring him; They can’t choose it no matter how much they want to.

So what’s holding him back? Is something missing from your game? Are voters hesitant? No. It’s none of these. The problem is simple: his age. Vaibhav is only 14 years old which is actually very young. Sounds weird, right? But there is a rule behind this.

The ICC introduced a rule in 2020: Players must be at least 15 years old to play for their national team. There are almost no exceptions. That’s the only thing standing in Vaibhav’s way right now.

Good news? Almost there. Vaibhav will turn 15 in less than three months. He will finally be eligible to play for India by March 27, 2026. Whether the selectors go for it immediately or wait a bit, that’s another story.

Currently, Vaibhav is one of the most exciting young names in Indian cricket. It wouldn’t be a shock to watch him make the jump to the senior team soon. If he maintains this level, things are about to get really interesting. Let’s see how everything will turn out.

Recently, Vaibhav Suryavanshi was honored with Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar, the country’s highest civilian award for individuals aged five to 18, at the National Children’s Awards 2025.

14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi received this prestigious award from the President of India Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday and had the opportunity to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi later that day.

Established to reward outstanding achievements in various fields such as sports, innovation, science and technology, arts and culture, social service or extraordinary acts of bravery, Bal Puraskar is considered the youth equivalent of Khel Ratna within the framework of National Awards.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s meteoric rise has become one of the most discussed narratives in international sports this year.
