Two New York Times columnists are being hammered by critics for their poor judgment on the infamous Trump-Biden debate after former First Lady Jill Biden claimed she thought her husband was “having a stroke.”
Then-President Joe Biden shocked the nation with his disastrous debate performance in June 2024, resulting in him dropping out of the presidential race weeks later.
“I don’t know what happened,” Jill Biden told CBS News this week. “So when I watched it, I thought, ‘Oh my God, he’s having a stroke,’ and it scared the hell out of me.”
The Atlantic also reported a quote from her upcoming book in which she thinks her husband may have been “drugged.”

What has since resurfaced in the wake of their comments were the two Times columnists’ charitable takeaways from Biden’s ill-fated debate.
“Well, we had a garrulous and stumbling President Biden and an erratic and incoherent Donald Trump who spent two hours spouting lies. Is there a winner here? No,” Times columnist Jamelle Bouie said. he said then.

“Nobody won this debate, but there’s no doubt who lost: everyone who plans to vote for president in November,” wrote Times columnist Lydia Polgreen. “For Biden, it was a fiasco. He was barely audible at times. He went unanswered on the most powerful issues, from abortion to democracy. Trump lied and lied and lied, and no one — certainly not the moderators and, worse, not even Biden — rebutted him in the slightest. Trump fussed and glared. He attacked Biden viciously and looked like a bully. This is the choice Americans face. This was a disaster for America.”

Bouie and Polgreen were far outnumbered by their ten colleagues, all of whom declared Trump the winner of the debate.
National Review senior writer Dan McLaughlin shared an image of the Times’ scoring chart on X: “Biden’s own wife thought he was having a stroke. Two NY Times columnists insisted he was tied with Trump.”

McLaughlin’s post went viral, prompting other critics to comment on it as well.
“Positive return: A [stroke]or possibly drugged, Biden miraculously fought Trump to a draw!” joked The Atlantic’s Ashley Parker.
CNN correspondent Andrew Kaczynski reacted: “I think about this painting all the time hahaha.”
“Hahaha!” replied Josh Holmes, co-host of the “Ruthless” podcast.

“It’s hilarious,” said Mac Thiessen, a Washington Post columnist and Fox News contributor.
Fox News Digital asked Bouie and Polgreen if they stood by their decision or if they had changed their minds since the debate. Neither responded to requests for comment.
