Woman died after 10-minute power cut during heart surgery

After an unexpected power outage at the SCunthorpe General Hospital, a woman died during the operation, which meant that doctors could not complete critical cardiac surgery until the power was taken back.
77 -year -old Jean Dye, on September 7, 2020, the treatment room “sudden and unexpected” loss of electricity, surgeons can not use vital equipment, he said.
The loss of power came as the surgeons aimed to repair a tearing in an artery that caused during the operation, which was accepted as a “rare but well -known complication of the procedure”.
The 10 -minute deduction meant that the surgical team could not use real -time x -ray (knitting tubes inserted into the blood vessels to keep them open).
After an engineer came and restored power, the stenting was completed. However, the report of Greater Lincolnshire Senior coronary Paul Smith’s report, “Mrs. Dye has not recovered and its death is verified,” he says.
“In the balance of possibilities, Mrs. Dye would survive, but for the loss of electricity.” He said.
“No clear cause of this loss of power was detected.”
The report also warns that the investigation can still be a source of concern for the electrical systems in the hospital. “I think there is a risk of future deaths unless there is action.” He said.
“All the staff at the scene was unaware of the cause of the loss of power that had never experienced such a situation before, and an engineer was called to restore his power.”
However, the report found evidence for similar deductions national. “Something that can be clearly revealed and emerges.”
“If the staff were aware of the exact cause of the loss of power on this occasion and had the opportunity to reset the circuit without waiting for the arrival of an engineer who had to join a separate plant room, the deduction period would be significantly reduced.”
Mr. Smith added: “There may be future cases where such fine margins are critical.”
The report states that NHS is obliged to answer the problems brought up in the report until 28 August 2025.
A NHS Spokesman Independent: “NHS UK is expanding its deepest sympathy to Jean Dye’s family and friends. We carefully think about the prevention of future deaths sent to us by HM Coroner and we will respond over time.”
