This development signals potential advances in bilateral relations; The US envoy’s post comes amid rumors of a possible India-US trade deal announcement even as Trump’s high tariffs on Indian exports continue to create uncertainty over bilateral relations.
The US Ambassador’s post fuels speculation that an India-US trade deal announcement will be made soon, despite ongoing uncertainties arising from President Trump’s steep 50% tariffs on Indian exports, comprising 25% reciprocal duties plus 25% penalties tied to India’s purchases of Russian oil.
The phone call between the two leaders builds on recent developments, including Commerce Minister Rajesh Agrawal’s statement that the India-US bilateral trade agreement is very close to completion after six rounds of negotiations, with exemptions granted to more than 200 Indian agricultural products such as spices and tea to restore competitiveness and no need for further official rounds, with only final physical or virtual meetings being held before the announcement.
This is in line with Piyush Goyal’s January 31 update on closing “sticky issues” towards the $500 Billion trade target by 2030. This comes post-Union Budget 2026, where India will pursue balanced reciprocity, building on the frameworks of the Modi-Trump summit in February 2025, while addressing US demands for vulnerable sectors.
In December 2025, President Trump and Prime Minister Modi reviewed the progress of the partnership in their last phone call. They discussed expanding ties in trade, critical technologies, energy, defense and security.
Highlighting the development of the India-US trade agreement with the appointment of the US ambassador on January 12, he said earlier last month: “India is the greatest country in the world. Reaching the finish line is not an easy task. But we are determined to get there.”
After presenting his credentials to President Droupadi Murmu, US Ambassador Sergio Gor expressed his willingness to cooperate with the government and people of India on common priorities, defense, trade, technology and critical minerals. It aims to strengthen the US-India partnership between the world’s oldest and largest democracies and highlights a period of great promise in bilateral relations.
Currently, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is visiting the United States from today, February 2-4, 2026, to attend the Critical Minerals Ministerial hosted by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The phone call between the two leaders could be of great importance in strengthening relations between the US and India amid global turmoil.
