Zohran Mamdani’s wife skips America 250 for Islamic ‘spiritual wellness’ retreat in Spain
Rama Duwaji, wife of the Mayor of New York Zohran MamdaniHe faced criticism after he reportedly traveled to Mallorca, Spain, for an Islamic “spiritual health” retreat over the July 4th weekend, as New York and the rest of the country celebrated America’s 250th anniversary.
The New York Post reported Duwaji was reportedly seen at Newark International Airport on Monday before boarding a flight to Palma and heading to a sold-out retreat by The Women Sanctuary.

Assemblyman Frank Morano, R-Staten Island, also criticized Duwaji’s absence during the sesquicentennial celebrations, saying officials can take family members on trips but need to recognize the importance of this milestone.
“It is disappointing that the First Lady chose to be abroad rather than take part in one of the biggest civic events that will mark our city and our country this year,” Morano told The Post. he said.
Morano said the issue is not whether Duwaji should be allowed to travel, but whether he will attend events in the city during the 250th anniversary.
“Nobody’s saying elected officials and their families can’t take vacations, but this was a moment for the city and the country, and he missed it,” Morano said.
Republican council members claim Duwaji’s absence from the sesquicentennial celebrations is a missed opportunity for the city.

Women’s Shelter website lists the “Herbs of the Quran | 6th Edition” event as a sold-out retreat, among other sold-out events. A separate retreat page describes the Mallorca program as focusing on plants mentioned in the Quran, including olives, pomegranates, dates and figs, along with workshops, meals and spiritual reflections.
Mamdani stayed New York City during the heat wave and the city’s America 250 event. The city is expanding cooling centers, extending pool hours and asking businesses and New Yorkers to set thermostats to 78 degrees during times of peak demand, his office said July 1.
