24 Media Houses Booked For Revealing Minor’s Identity; Separate Case For Defaming Judiciary

Petbasheerabad, which is probing the Pocso Act case of Bandi Sai Bageerath, on Sunday filed fresh criminal cases against 24 media managements for publishing and printing photos, videos and personal information of the minor victim and her family members and distributing them on social media platforms. These fall under relevant sections of the Pocso Act that prohibit dissemination of details of minor victims.
In response to the complaint filed by the chairman of the child welfare committee in Medchal-Malkajgiri district, the Petbasheerabad police registered cases under Section 74 of the Juvenile Justice Act, Section 72(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 23 of the Pocso Act.
Police have confirmed that charges have been opened against social media users who shared and distributed photos, videos and personal details of the 17-year-old victim, along with those of her parents.
“We have identified Instagram and Facebook account IDs as well as relevant URLs used to distribute the material; our IT and cyber teams are making efforts to track down those responsible,” a police officer said.
Strict action will be taken against people who share or amplify such sensitive content on social media or even distribute restricted images, videos and even the name of the victim and his family members, a senior police officer has warned.
Meanwhile CHarminar police on Sunday registered the cases after the Telangana High Court Registrar lodged a complaint about viral posts and reports alleging that Union minister of state Bandi Sanjay had offered favors to a member of the judiciary in exchange for bail for his son. The posts also alleged previous attempts to influence the police, mainstream media and social platforms.
The Registrar said the material being circulated was widely read by judges, lawyers and the public and had the potential to damage the reputation of the judiciary. On this basis, Charminar police registered cases under the Information Technology Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The Supreme Court clerk emphasized that false or malicious narratives targeting judges undermine public confidence in the judiciary and must be dealt with within the framework of the law.
Police confirmed they had launched an investigation and were reviewing the posts and their sources. Officials said the investigation will determine the author and motive behind the messages that tarnish the image of the judiciary.
