Victorian commuters set to pay more for public transport fares

Public transport users in Victoria are set to pay more when they take trams, buses or trains in the new year after Transport Victoria announced a major fare increase.
The increase, effective January 1, 2026, will add 40 cents to the full-day cap for Zone 1, Zone 1+2 metropolitan fares and the regional wage cap.
Passengers will now pay $11.40 for the full daily fare cap, down from $11 for trips in zones 1 and 2, and sit at $7.20 for fares in zone 2 only.
In case of discounts, the daily wage cap for zones 1 and 2 will increase to $5.70.
On weekends or public holidays, daily rates will increase to $8.00 or $4.00 in the case of discounts.

The fare change is part of an annual review and is being implemented across the state, Transport Victoria announced.
“Fees are reviewed annually and adjusted as necessary through statewide changes, ensuring equity for all Victorians.”
“Public transport fares contribute to the functioning of our train, tram and bus network,” the statement said.
