Gunman who injured 2 people at Old Dominion University in Virginia is dead, college says

A gunman is dead and two others were injured following a shooting at Old Dominion University on Thursday morning, the school in Virginia said.

ODU said a gunman opened fire inside the business school building, wounding two people who were taken to the hospital. It is not yet clear how the attacker died.

About an hour after the shooting, ODU announced there was no longer a threat on campus.

The public university in Norfolk canceled classes and suspended all activities on the main campus for the rest of Thursday and urged people to avoid Constant Hall and the surrounding area while emergency officials continued to work.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said on social platform X that there were agents at the scene supporting the response.

Located on the coast of Norfolk, Old Dominion University has approximately 24,000 students, including 17,500 undergraduates. The school has approximately 240 degree programs and is known for its research expenditures and doctoral programs. About 30% of its students are affiliated with the military, according to the university’s website. The area is also home to Naval Station Norfolk, the largest naval station in the world.
