Shedeur Sanders’ competition grows as Browns draft another QB

The Cleveland Browns have added a new one to their already crowded quarterback room.

In the sixth round, they selected Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green, just a year after taking Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders while waiting for Deshaun Watson to get healthy.

The Browns’ quarterback room was so crowded last year that Week 1 starter Joe Flacco was traded during the season. Of course, the Browns did this to get a look at their young talent, but they also had Kenny Pickett traded last offseason.

Last year, the Browns drafted Gabriel out of Oregon in the third round and Sanders went into an unprecedented free fall. However, they also defeated Sanders in the fifth round.

Gabriel received the nod after Flacco was traded, but Sanders replaced him after he suffered a concussion and remained in his position after earning his first NFL start.

Cleveland’s quarterback play was poor throughout the season regardless of who took the snaps; He ranked 31st in completion percentage (57.89%) and passing yards per game (165.1). Maybe the Browns want to find a diamond in the rough.

Meanwhile, Watson’s $230 million contract will expire after this season. The Browns, who openly admitted their dismay at the monster trade and deal, restructured his contract last month for the third time in nearly a year.

Sanders appears to be leading heading into Week 1, but he hasn’t exactly run away from work, so it’s definitely a clear contest — and it looks like it’s even more open now.

In his first 4 seasons at both Boise State and Arkansas, Green completed 60.1% of his passes for 9,662 yards, 59 touchdowns and 35 interceptions. He led the SEC with 13.7 yards per completion last season and leads the Mountain West in the same category (14.5) in 2023.
