Pensioner aged 92 is charged with murdering his 87-year-old wife at a home in Exeter

A 92-year-old man was accused of murdering his 87-year-old wife in her home.
Laurence Billam appeared in court from his hospital bed, accused of murdering his wife at their home in Exeter, Devon.
Police and paramedics rushed to the couple’s home at around 12.40pm on Sunday, April 19.
87-year-old Shirley Billam was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
A major police investigation was launched and led to the arrest of her husband.
Exeter Magistrates’ Court heard Billam allegedly smothered his wife with a pillow in sheltered accommodation before overdosing.
The white-haired defendant was represented by his lawyer, Katrina Byrne, who sat next to his hospital bed.
He spoke to confirm his name, age and address.

Billam, one of the country’s oldest defendants facing such a charge, will also appear before a judge at Exeter Crown Court on Wednesday.
Devon and Cornwall police said emergency crews attended the block of flats and found Shirley dead at the scene.
They said Ms Billam’s family was being supported by specially trained police officers.
It is not possible to apply for bail in the criminal court of peace for the crime of murder.
Detective Inspector Guy Biggar, who is leading the investigation, previously said: ‘We are not looking for anyone else in connection with the death and the public will still see an increased police presence in the area as our inquiries continue.’
