‘Adopt electric cooking, mobility for clean energy transition’

The Center has urged all States, including Telangana, to promote large-scale adoption of electric cooking and electric mobility as part of India’s transition to clean energy and make concerted efforts to achieve the country’s Net Zero emissions target by 2070.

Speaking at the National Workshop on Renewable Consumption Obligation (RCO) held in Hyderabad on Sunday, Milind Deore, Secretary, Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power, said that India has achieved an installed electricity capacity of 297.37 GW from non-fossil fuel sources as of June 30, accounting for about 59.5% of the target of 500 GW by 2030.

Stating that electric cooking and electric mobility are the main pillars of the country’s long-term energy strategy, Deore said that electric cooking can reduce home cooking costs by 25-35% and reduce dependence on imported LPG and LNG.

He emphasized the need to promote affordable, energy-efficient and safe cooking technologies and advocated the distribution of induction cooktops to homes, institutions and anganwadi centres. He appreciated Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) for promoting clean energy through distribution of induction cookers and kitchenware across states.
