Ann Widdecombe: Suspect ‘seen putting wooden stick in car’ on day she | UK | News

Neighbors of a man arrested on suspicion of Ann Widdecombe’s murder say they saw him place “some sort of wooden stick” on the passenger side of a red car before driving off.

The man was arrested yesterday in South Yorkshire, about 300 miles from Ann’s home in Dartmoor, where she was found with a serious head injury. The Telegraph revealed he was believed to have traveled around 300 miles to his home in Dartmoor. The former MP was found dead in his bungalow in Haytor, Devon, on Thursday (July 8). However, police believe he was murdered approximately 24 hours before he was found. A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, and police are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the murder.

CCTV footage taken at around 7am on Wednesday shows a young man leaving an address linked to the suspect. Widdecombe’s home in Dartmoor is about a four-hour drive from where the suspect was arrested.

“I don’t know what he does for a living,” the neighbor said. “I think he went a little crazy when his father died.”

Other neighbors suspect he has a learning disability.

Another neighbor, describing the arrest, said: “A lot of unmarked police cars and a lot of people entered the house. To tell the truth, I feel very sick.”

Deputy Chief Constable Matt Longman said at a press conference on Sunday: “At this point, there is no information yet that this is a terrorism-related incident and at this point, we are not looking at anyone else in connection with this murder.

“Detectives are keeping an open mind as to possible motive. There is nothing at this stage to suggest this is politically motivated.”

He then urged the public “not to share or engage in these speculations.” He said: “It is unhelpful, does not assist our investigation and is particularly distressing for Widdecombe’s family and friends.”
