Anzac Day 2026: Spirited but competitive two-up takes over North Beach RSL

Laughter and cheers filled North Beach RSL as hundreds gathered with drinks in hand for a spirited double game on Anzac Day.

Families and friends packed into the club, forming a tight-knit crowd where men and women of all ages waved $10, $20 and even $50 bills in the air as bettors kept an eye out for anyone looking to match their bets heads or tails.

Behind the scenes, volunteers Bill Wilson, Bruce Wainwright and Terry Gemeiner worked on the sausage sizzle, naming Chris Margin the branch’s second champion.

Mr. Margin was quick to disparage the title.

“It’s lucky but I love being a spinner,” he said.

“The real fun comes with everyone’s side bets.”

The room fell silent as Kip flew into the air, a pile of colorful cash waiting downstairs

All eyes were following the brown coins as they spun and spun, deciding the fate of each gambler’s spare bankroll.

“If both coins land heads, he wins. If both coins land heads, he wins. If both coins land tails, he wins,” Mr. Margin explains.

“If one is heads and the other is tails, this is called odds and the spin is thrown again. The spinner continues until a clear result is obtained.”

Unless you live in Kalgoorlie, where there is a dedicated dual ring for day play, the game is illegal to play throughout the country for most of the year, except April 25th.

Among the crowd was mother-of-two Candice Heath, who comes here every year with friends and family to commemorate Anzac Day.

He left this year $160 richer.

“It’s a great thing to do and there’s a great sense of community here,” he said, “I’m still learning the ropes of the game, so I’m happy to take home some money.”
