Congress–BJD Alliance Talk Stirs Odisha Politics Ahead Of 2027 Local Polls

What are you doing? A fresh political debate was triggered in Odisha on Monday after Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Bhakta Charan Das hinted at the possibility of an electoral alliance between his party and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), adding a new dimension to the state’s political landscape ahead of the upcoming panchayat and municipal elections.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Congress office in Khordha, the PCC chief said such an alliance could happen if approved by the party’s central leadership. The final decision will rest with the All India Congress Committee (AICC), he said.

Das noted that broader political considerations, including coordination between “secular parties”, could influence this move. He also touched on the cooperation witnessed in the previous Rajya Sabha elections and suggested that it could be extended to electoral politics if the leadership deems it necessary. He added that the Congress in Odisha is simultaneously preparing to contest and win the local body elections independently, but will comply with any instructions of the central leadership in the name of “national interest”.

These remarks are significant given the historically hostile relationship between the Congress and the BJD in Odisha and have fueled speculations about a potential realignment of political forces in the state.

Naveen Patnaik-led BJD has not completely ruled out this possibility. Senior party leader Debi Prasad Mishra said “there are possibilities in every field” and suggested that evolving political conditions could shape future decisions.

Stating that any move will depend on the current political situation and the interests of Odisha, Mishra reiterated that the party leadership will take an appropriate call at the right time. He also touched on ongoing speculation about the BJD’s potential alignment at the national level, although he refrained from offering a definitive position.

Political observers say that even the proposal of Congress-BJD alliance marks a remarkable shift in Odisha’s political discourse. As local body elections approach, attention is now focused on the relevant high commands and whether the reconnaissance signals will translate into an official election understanding.

Such an alliance, if implemented, could significantly alter the state’s electoral dynamics and reshape traditional political equations.
