Brazil’s Lula extends lead over Flavio Bolsonaro ahead of presidential vote, poll shows

SAO PAULO, July 15 (Reuters) – A Quaest poll commissioned by brokerage Genial on Wednesday showed Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva widening his lead over right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro ahead of October’s presidential election.
This is the first Quaest poll to follow a series of political developments that also include a corruption investigation targeting a top Lula ally and debates over accountability over new U.S. tariff threats against Brazil.
• Leftist Lula appears to have 45% voting intention in potential runoff elections; In contrast, Senator Bolsonaro, who is currently hopeful of the main opposition, receives 37% of the votes.
• A Quaest poll in June showed Lula leading Flavio Bolsonaro by 44% to 38%.
• In the first round scenario, Lula will receive 40%, Bolsonaro 28%, Ronaldo Caiado 4%, Renan Santos 3% and Romeu Zema 2%.
• In Brazil, if no candidate receives more than 50% of the valid votes, the two leading candidates go to a second round of voting.
• Quaest surveyed 2,004 people between July 10 and 13. The poll has a margin of error of two percentage points in either direction.
