Bring your own food! LPG shortage prompts action by IT giants HCLTech, Infosys, Cognizant

Due to concerns about the nationwide LPG shortage following the war in Iran, many companies called on their employees to bring their own food. Cognizant has now joined the list of companies taking measures to reduce reliance on office cafeterias amid the “shortage.”

Companies including Infosys, HCL and TCS made recommendations as tensions in the Middle East affected global energy markets. Amid the US-Israeli offensive, Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, affecting the passage of oil tankers and the movement of LPG and LNG supplies around the world.

Here’s what companies tell their employees:

1. Aware

The technologist has reportedly encouraged his employees to adopt a “Bring Your Own Food” (BYOF) approach wherever possible to reduce heavy reliance on commercial LPG-dependent cafeterias.

Cognizant said it was preparing for possible disruptions arising from price volatility, supply prioritization and pressure on vendors, Times of India reported.

As part of its contingency planning for facilities and food services, Cognizant has reportedly identified alternative food vendors that do not rely on commercial LPG. These include those using induction or solar cooking.

According to the report, the company is also exploring partnerships with cloud kitchens powered by electricity or solar energy to meet catering needs in case traditional supplies are disrupted.

2. HCLTech

Sources said HCLTech offered employees at its Chennai office the option to work from home on March 12 and 13 as cooking gas shortage disrupted internal cafeteria operations.

Executives said many cafeteria vendors were unable to operate due to the ongoing LPG shortage, leading the company to allow staff to work remotely for two days. Mint.

Infosys Ltd has also advised at least two of its locations, including Bengaluru and Chennai.

Infosys told employees in Bengaluru that cafeterias will operate with fewer menu items “due to an impending situation regarding the availability of commercial LPG.”

Live counter operations in offices have been suspended and employees are encouraged to purchase homemade food.
