Chertsey murder: Man charged with rape after girl, 2, found dead at Surrey home

A man accused of murdering a two-year-old girl found dead in a Surrey home has appeared in court.

Kevin Kerjean, 31, was also charged with rape of a child under 13 and sexual assault of a child under 13.

Police were called to a property in Pyrcroft Road, Chertsey, at around 5.40pm on Thursday following concerns about security reports and the girl was found dead.

Surrey Police initially said he was three years old but confirmed on Saturday he was two.

Police, whose major crime squad is leading the investigation into the death, said in a statement on Thursday that they believed the incident took place in a “family atmosphere”.

Kerjean, a French national born in the Central African Republic, appeared at Guildford Magistrates’ Court on Saturday and was remanded in custody ahead of his next appearance at Guildford Crown Court on Monday.

Detective Superintendent Jon Groenen said: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the boy’s family and everyone who knew him.

“Our teams are working hard to get a picture of what happened and there will remain a significant police presence on Pyrcroft Road for the coming days.

“We appreciate that the incident itself, as well as a significant police presence, will be concerning for residents and we would like to thank them for their co-operation in carrying out our investigation.”

Police said, “We are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident at this stage.”

On Friday, bouquets of flowers were left at the entrance of Syward Place, on the corner of Pycroft Road and Bell Bridge Road.

One said: “I’m surprised, this is very unusual for Chertsey.”

Another said: “It’s a tragic situation. Things like this don’t happen here.”
