Controversial CBD racetrack in pole position for start

A controversial urban motorsport racetrack is a step closer to being built after an environmental watchdog refused to investigate its potential impact on nearby residents.

The Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority will not consider the Labor government’s plans to build a massive entertainment and sports precinct on the edge of Perth’s CBD, including a multi-use racing track that could host Supercars.

“We are aware of the community’s concerns but are comfortable that other regulatory mechanisms are in place to address potential issues,” EPA Administrator Darren Walsh said.

The $217 million project has several opponents, including federal Perth Labor MP Patrick Gorman, a factional ally of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Mr Gorman recently called on the Cook government to abandon the project, saying many local people were concerned about the negative impacts it could have on the riverside parkland and surrounding area.

More than 950 individuals and organizations responded to EPA’s call for comment.

The authority said their comments had been taken into account and that any environmental and noise impacts would be localized, intermittent and brief and could be adequately regulated by existing legislation.

The EPA also noted that the proposed project is adjacent to existing entertainment venues such as Optus Stadium, which hosts AFL matches and concerts.

Save Burswood Park Alliance said the EPA’s decision was outrageous.

Spokesperson Robin Harvey said the project would destroy lakes and wildlife in Burswood Park and directly impact thousands of residents.

The proposed mixed-use precinct, which was an election promise from the state Labor government in March, will also include an outdoor amphitheater for live music, and the racecourse could also be used for cycling and community sports.

The area east of Perth CBD is adjacent to the Crown resort and casino and was previously a landfill and golf course.
