Egypt Coach ‘Not Sure’ If Salah Will Start Knockout Clash

-Arlington: Egypt coach Hossam Hassan has cast doubt on whether talisman Mohamed Salah will start Friday’s World Cup last-32 clash with Australia in Texas following a hamstring problem.

Salah trained with the rest of the squad in Dallas on Thursday, but it was a lighter session in front of the cameras.

The 34-year-old former Liverpool superstar had to leave the field in the 57th minute of Egypt’s 1-1 draw with Iran a week ago.

The striker had an ice pack placed under his left thigh, putting his participation against the Socceroos in doubt.

“We only tried to get him to do a partial workout yesterday,” Hassan said Thursday on the eve of the Dallas Cowboys’ home game.

“He is looking forward to making his own contribution tomorrow.

“On the other hand, I won’t take any risks unless I’m 100 percent sure he’s fit and willing to go tomorrow.

“I’m not so sure he’ll be in the starting 11.”

Egypt wants to make more history for their country in Texas.

They achieved the first World Cup victory in their history by beating New Zealand 3-1 in the group stage.

Hassan said Tony Popovic was wary of Australia’s height and pace, especially from set-pieces.

Neither Australia nor Egypt have won a qualifying match at the World Cup.

“We are very well prepared to handle whatever we face,” Hassan said.

“We have been working hard with our style and personality for over two years.

“There are multiple players, it is a collective and we aim to showcase it tomorrow.

“We aim to bring joy to our people, Africa and the Arab world.”

Egypt, a powerhouse in African football with seven continental titles, has struggled to establish itself on the global stage in the previous three World Cups.
