Former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is currently imprisoned in Brooklyn’s infamous Metropolitan Detention Center following his capture by US forces; This is the same prison that Sean P. Diddy Combs once called ‘hell on earth.’
Maduro, who served as president of Venezuela for more than a decade, was captured in Caracas during a simultaneous military operation on January 3, 2026. He was later transported to the United States and is currently detained at the notorious prison awaiting federal charges including narco-terrorism conspiracy and cocaine importation conspiracy.
The Metropolitan Detention Center, commonly known as MDC Brooklyn, is a federal prison used primarily to detain individuals before and during their trials in Manhattan and Brooklyn courts. Over time, it hosted a number of high-profile detainees, including R.Kelly, Luigi Mangione, and especially Combs.
During her trial in Fall 2025, Combs was found guilty of two counts of transportation for the purpose of prostitution under the federal Mann Act. He was acquitted of the more serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy.
He was sentenced to four years and two months in prison and transferred to FCI Fort Dix prison in New Jersey.
Combs did not remain silent about conditions at MDC after he was sent to MDC following his arrest on sex trafficking and other related charges in late 2024. In legal documents related to the case, his representatives portrayed conditions at MDC as unlivable.
In court documents opposing his requests for home detention, his lawyer argued that the prison was “unsuitable for pretrial detention” and highlighted concerns raised by district judges about prison conditions.
Conditions of the prison have been repeatedly described as ‘hell on earth’, a phrase taken from statements by legal representatives and others familiar with the facility.
Lawyers for the inmates and detainees portrayed the prison as ‘an overcrowded, understaffed and neglected federal prison, hell on earth,’ citing violence among other problems.
MDC has also come under scrutiny for problems such as inmate violence, staffing shortages, infrastructure failures and deaths, including stabbings and suicides.
Combs also indirectly quoted his lawyers’ comments about prison conditions. The legal team cited recent detainee deaths and security concerns in the files stating that the prison was not suitable for pre-trial detention.
At MDC, detainees may be housed in different units depending on classification and security needs.
The facility operates under the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, which has said it is trying to fix some of the facility’s problems by adding staff and updating infrastructure, but the facility’s reputation remains the focus of reporting and legal disputes.
When Maduro arrived in New York, he was processed and taken to prison under federal custody after his capture on Trump’s orders.
The charges against Maduro stem from a 2020 indictment that implicated him in narco-terrorism and drug trafficking activities that resulted in significant amounts of narcotics entering the United States.
Following his arrest, he was transported to a federal court in Manhattan where proceedings on those charges are expected to begin.
