Gissa job Andy! Labour MPs – including Rayner and Streeting – clamour for a selfie with would-be PM Burnham as they bid for a role in his new regime… but Reeves faces chop

Labor MPs, including former Cabinet ministers Angela Rayner and Wes Streeting, clamored for a selfie with future prime minister Andy Burnham today.

Shortly after being officially sworn in as MP for Makerfield following his landslide victory in a by-election last week, Mr Burnham enjoyed a photo op with his new colleagues.

Many of the MPs gathered in Parliament’s Westminster Hall will hope to find a job under Mr Burnham’s new regime if he succeeds Keir Starmer at Downing Street – as is now certain.

Mr Burnham was accompanied by Labor deputy leader Lucy Powell, a long-time ally of the former Manchester mayor, who could soon expect to be appointed Deputy Prime Minister.

Miss Rayner and Mr Streeting were also among the notable attendees; Both former Cabinet ministers had hoped to return to Government under Mr Burnham.

There is speculation that the pair have reached an agreement with Mr Burnham not to challenge him for the Labor leadership in exchange for senior roles in his new administration.

Sir Keir’s senior ministers to attend the Westminster Hall event included Rachel Reeves and Jonathan Reynolds.

This is likely to have been an awkward situation for Ms Reeves amid expectations that Mr Burnham would be ousted as Chancellor if she became Prime Minister.

Mr Burnham’s allies are said to have concluded that putting Ms Reeves in charge of the Treasury would not represent a sufficient change of direction under Sir Keir.

Ms Reeves was also present at the Westminster Hall event after previously refusing to attend Sir Keir’s tearful resignation statement outside No10’s famous black door.

This was despite Ms Reeves residing in the two-bedroom flat above No10, while Sir Keir’s family occupied the larger flat above No11.

It has been suggested that Mr Streeting, the former health secretary, could be appointed Chancellor by Mr Burnham as part of a deal for him to give up the controversial leadership challenge.

Shortly after Sir Keir announced his resignation as Prime Minister on Monday, Mr Streeting said he would stand behind Mr Burnham’s leadership bid.

Mr Reynolds is currently Labor’s chief whip and may be hoping to take a more senior role in the Cabinet reshuffle led by Mr Burnham.

He is said to be among the Cabinet ministers who have told Sir Keir in recent days that his time is up, as scores of Labor MPs demand Mr Burnham take over in No 10.

Despite reports that current Energy Secretary Ed Miliband is set to replace Ms Reeves as Treasury chief, Mr Burnham is now said to be cool to the idea.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden and former defense secretary John Healey are others touted as possible Chancellors.

Louise Haigh, who was forced to leave her role as transport secretary under Sir Keir after it was revealed she had a historic conviction for fraud, is also set to run for a senior post under Mr Burnham after running the Makerfield by-election campaign.

Anneliese Midgley, once an adviser to Sir Keir, could replace Mr Reynolds as chief whip under Mr Burnham, while his chief constable in Greater Manchester, Kate Green, has also been appointed private secretary.

The Makerfield by-election was triggered by the resignation of local MP Josh Simons; Simons said he wanted to give Mr Burnham the chance to return to Westminster and challenge Sir Keir because Labor had ‘exploded’.

Mr Simons is among those tipped for a senior role at Downing Street under Mr Burnham.
