Gnowangerup earthquake: Great Southern town rocked by five earthquakes in one day

The big Southern town of Gnowangerup was hit by a series of earthquakes on Saturday, after five quakes were recorded in six hours just outside the small town.

The first two were recorded at 5.25am and 6.43am on Saturday, recording magnitude 2.3 in the area bounded by Tie Line Road, Kwobrup Road, Broomehill-Gnowangerup Road and the Great Southern Highway.

This was followed by a second tremor measuring 2.9 on the Richter scale in a similar area at 10.40am, both recorded 1 km below the surface.

The third earthquake was recorded at 11.58am, just before noon, with a magnitude of 2.5, just 3.7km below the surface, followed by a final tremor of magnitude 2.9 at 13.25, this time at 2.7km.

Recent earthquakes were recorded between Wilson Road, Gnowangerup-Kwobrup Road and Wood Road.

Geoscience Australia and Emergency WA have been contacted for comment.
