High school cheerleader dies after being shot at Alabama party

A high school cheerleader was shot and killed at a party on Sunday, resulting in serious brain injuries.

Kimber Mills, 18, was shot early Sunday in Pinson, Alabama, in a heavily wooded area called The Pit. AL.com. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect, 27-year-old Steven Tyler Whitehead, showed up around 12:24 a.m. and fired his gun several times after a verbal and physical fight. Whitehead is charged with three counts of attempted murder and is being held on $180,000 bail.

The victim’s sister, Ashley Mills, told AL.com that no one knew Whitehead and that she tried talking to one of Kimber’s friends. The girl then told her boyfriend, resulting in a fight that resulted in shots being fired, Ashley said.

“Kimber was caught in the crossfire,” Ashley Mills said.

Kimber Mills was a senior at Cleveland High School; Here she was a cheerleader and also ran track. Kimber Mills’ sister said she died Wednesday night.

“Our sweet sister went to be with the Lord last night at 7:08pm! She had the biggest honor parade the doctor has ever seen! She was and is loved by so many. We will miss you Kimber! Everyone is free to share this post wherever they deem it necessary!” Ashley Mills wrote on Facebook.

According to the report, Kimber Mills planned to attend the University of Alabama in 2026 in hopes of becoming a nurse.

Ashley Mills said her sister’s injuries were so severe that a pride parade was held on Tuesday afternoon.

“There’s a lot of trauma to his brain,” Ashley Mills said. “He’s breathing on his own with an assisted breathing machine… We put him on DNR because we don’t want to hurt him anymore trying to bring him back. We’ve already made arrangements for him to be an organ donor because that’s what he wanted.”

“He had some spunk in his step,” Ashley Mills said.

Trussville Police Chief Eric Rush said Kimber Mills was shot in the head and leg and was taken to UAB Hospital in Birmingham.

3 more people were injured in the fire.

Rylie Cirbo, who knew Kimber Mills, told Fox News Digital: “I would rather she be known for her bubbly personality and big smile than for her tragedy.”

“I am grateful to him for the happiness he brought to my other friends,” he said. “He seemed like such a bright light in so many lives.”
