Rollins College student arrested for bringing AR-15 onto campus, police say

Constantine Demetriades, a 21-year-old student at Rollins College, was arrested for allegedly having an AR-15 rifle in his dorm room.

Demetriades faced up to five years in prison after campus security discovered his online order for an ammunition delivery to his campus apartment, leading police to search his bedroom and find an AR-15, tactical vest and multiple knives.

“I guess it makes me feel a little insecure,” Rollins College student Jacie Arsenault said.

Demetriades, who has been on the rowing team since his freshman year and won a medal in the sport, told police he knew his concealed carry permit from New Jersey was not valid in Florida and admitted he shouldn’t have had a gun on campus, according to a Winter Park Police report.

He told police he usually kept the gun with a friend who lived off campus, but decided to bring it to his dorm after returning from Thanksgiving break around 3 a.m.

Demetriades told police he drove to New Jersey with the gun and “liked shooting as a hobby,” according to police.

He also told police, “He had no ill intentions and was working as armed security at clubs in downtown Orlando.”

Rollins College, a private campus with a no-gun policy, stated that Demetriades was facing a student government process and could not be on campus until the issue was resolved.

The incident sparked concerns among students about campus safety, as Rollins College enforces a strict no-gun policy to ensure a violence-free environment.

A spokesperson sent the following statement to Channel 9:

“On Wednesday, the College received a report indicating a violation of our weapons policy. Upon receiving this information, we immediately initiated an investigation. We quickly identified and contacted the student, who fully cooperated with College officials and local law enforcement as we investigated the matter further. The student was arrested and not allowed on campus while we continued the student conduct process.”
