Iran state TV says draft deal with US would reopen Hormuz shipping, end naval blockade

(Corrects first paragraph to show state television received the draft, not Tehran. Changed “Source” heading to state television)

DUBAI, May 27 (Reuters) – Iranian state television said it had obtained the first unofficial draft framework for a memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States on ending the conflict.

According to the framework, Iran will restore commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz to pre-war levels within a month, while the United States will withdraw its military forces from Iran’s vicinity and lift its naval blockade.

State television said the framework, which excludes military ships and envisions Iran managing ship traffic in the strait in cooperation with Oman, has not yet been finalized and Tehran will not take any steps without “concrete verification”.

He added that if a final agreement is reached within 60 days, it could be approved as a binding UN Security Council resolution.

The resulting US-Iran MoU stems from indirect talks initiated after the war began in February, in which Pakistan played a central mediating role between Tehran and Washington.

The war broke out after a sharp escalation between Iran and Israel earlier this year; Both sides have launched missile and drone strikes that have disrupted shipping in the Gulf and prompted US military intervention, raising fears of a broader regional conflict.
