Man, 23, is arrested on suspicion of rape after woman was attacked in an alleyway

A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape after a woman was allegedly attacked near a busy street in the city center on Saturday morning.

Police responded to a report of a woman being raped in an alleyway of The Tything in Worcester.

Detectives believe the alleged incident occurred between 6 and 8:30 a.m.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of rape and remained in police custody on Sunday afternoon.

West Mercia Police said it would increase police patrols in the area as it knew the incident would ‘bring great concern to the community’.

A force spokesman said: ‘An investigation has been launched following reports that a woman was raped in Worcester yesterday morning.

‘The incident is believed to have happened between 6am and 8.30am in an alley in The Tything.

‘A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape. He remains in police custody while investigations continue.’

Police are now appealing for information that may assist the investigation.

Detective Inspector Lisa Tibbits said: ‘I know an incident like this would cause great concern in the community.

‘I would like to reassure the public that a thorough investigation is ongoing.

‘I would appeal to anyone who has any information that would assist our investigations, no matter how trivial you think it is, to please contact the police.

‘As part of our investigation, we are detaining a person who assisted us in the investigations.

‘There will be an increased police presence in the area as we carry out investigations and specially trained officers provide victim support.’
