US President Donald Trump claims killings of Iranian protesters have ‘stopped’, but Tehran signals fast trials

Amid rising tensions and protests in Iran, US President Donald Trump declared on Wednesday (local time) that “murders in Iran have stopped” and “there are no execution plans.”

Trump’s remarks came at a time of unrest and increased international interest in the developments. Iran has formally appealed to the United Nations Security Council and the UN Secretary-General, accusing the United States of inciting violence, interfering in Iran’s internal affairs and threatening military action, according to the official letter distributed by Iran’s Permanent Mission to the UN on Wednesday.

Unrest continues to occur in Iran as the protests entered their 20th day on Wednesday. What began as demonstrations over record inflation and a sharp decline in Iran’s currency has turned into widespread unrest across the country, with reports of unrest coming from more than 280 regions.

Meanwhile, Iran will witness more brutality as the administration decided to execute the first protester on Wednesday, amid mass arrests of anti-regime protesters, the New York Post reported, citing human rights groups.

Also on Wednesday, the Iranian Embassy in India issued a strongly worded statement on the US decision to withdraw from key global bodies and “unfair tariff imposition”, saying Washington’s decisions were pushing the world towards the collapse of global norms.
