Met Office names 9 areas facing heavy rain on Saturday | Weather | News

A widespread rain system is set to move across much of the country on Saturday, June 13, resulting in wet conditions in nine counties. According to the Met Office’s forecast, persistent showers will continue the recent unstable weather conditions.

In recent weeks the UK has moved from record-breaking spring heat in May to cooler conditions and periods of heavy rain. However, the weather is expected to improve towards the end of the week, with a move towards more stable conditions across the UK. But while weather maps indicate a wall of rain will hit Scotland in particular, much of the country looks set to miss out on sunshine.

Scotland is barely visible on Met Office weather maps at 12.30pm on Saturday, with the country heading for a wet day. Western Scotland looks set to see the worst of the conditions, with up to 2mm of rain forecast as the mercury hovers around 15C.

The rest of the country will experience around 1mm of rain per hour. Scattered showers were seen in Leeds, North Yorkshire and Durham.

Fast forward to 14.45 and the rain will have dispersed a bit over Scotland. But heavy rain is forecast to flood the Highlands with up to 2mm of water.

Rain may also occur in parts of northwest England. The rest of the country looks ready to enjoy the long-awaited dry weather.

Temperatures in the south could reach 23C on Saturday and 24C on Sunday.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Greg Wolverson said: “As we progress towards the weekend the jet stream temporarily shifts northwards, causing high pressure to build up from the south.

“This brings a drier, warmer weekend for many. Southern areas on Saturday will see a calmer day with some sunny spells developing. Temperatures here could reach 22-23°C. Northern areas may still see some clouds and occasional rain in the early hours, but conditions are expected to improve there too later in the day.”

“Sunday looks set to be fairly dry across the UK, with more sunshine and temperatures continuing to rise. Many western parts of the UK can expect maximum temperatures in the low 20s Celsius, with the hottest spots likely to be in southern England where temperatures could reach 23-24°C, feeling noticeably warmer than at the start of the week.”
