Monsoon 2026 tracker LIVE: After strong onset, southwest monsoon to enter a sluggish phase in Kerala

Although somewhat delayed, Kerala witnessed the onset of a characteristically strong southwest monsoon; Heavy rains negatively affected many parts of the state in the first 10 days of June. The rains brought down rising temperatures and replenished the state’s water bodies. However, active monsoon conditions are expected to weaken in the coming days and the southwest monsoon is expected to enter a relatively dormant phase.
Offshore troughs and related eddies that often trigger extremely heavy rainfall events have yet to develop this season, according to meteorologists. Meanwhile, both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea remain largely calm, with no storm systems forming over the Indian Ocean or the Pacific in the first phase of June. These systems often strengthen monsoon currents, allowing them to penetrate deeper into the southern peninsula and advance northward.
