The Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that Tamil Nadu has sought compensation of around Rs 1,041.8 crore for environmental damage and related losses arising from accumulation of plastic debris along the coast following the sinking of the container ship. The Chief Bench of the court in New Delhi had asked the Ministry to submit details of States and Union Territories that may have suffered environmental damage due to the shipwreck after taking suo motu cognizance of the report titled ‘Containers on sunken ship likely to drift towards Alappuzha on Kollam Coast within 48 hours: INCOIS’.
