The unrest has raised concerns about violence in the Bengal elections, especially in sensitive areas such as Murshidabad.
Humayun Kabir faced protests and made serious allegations
AUJP chief Humayun Kabir faced protests when he visited a polling booth in Naoda. According to PTI, TMC supporters surrounded his vehicle and chanted “go back”, accusing him of being a “BJP agent”.
Kabir, who is contesting from the region, alleged that the ruling party was engaged in large-scale political manipulation.
“Mamata Banerjee bought 27 of our candidates from various seats in Bengal at prices ranging from Rs 9 lakh to Rs 30 lakh. I started with 142 candidates and now I am ready to contest in 115 seats,” she said, according to PTI.
Proxy voting allegation raises concerns about poll integrity
In a separate incident, a voter claimed that a vote had been cast in his name before going to the polls.
“My daughter and I came to vote. I cast my vote, then we were told that someone had already voted in my daughter’s name,” said her father Gopal Das, as quoted by ANI.
The family claimed they were directed to contact election officials but did not receive immediate resolution, raising concerns about the transparency of the election.
Clashes broke out in Siliguri
There was a clash between TMC’s supporters and BJP candidate Sankar Ghosh at Jagadish Chandra Vidyapith, Booth No. in Siliguri. The heated debate in 26/237 increased tensions during voting in the constituency.
Crude bomb attack created fear among citizens
The situation worsened following reports of a crude bomb attack in the district the day before the election. Eyewitnesses stated that there was a tense atmosphere and that the residents of the region were afraid that the violence would continue.
According to ANI, an eyewitness said, “This incident probably took place between 20.00 and 20.30. A woman was injured. We are very afraid, another incident could happen at any time.”
“Two boys came and threw a bomb near my feet… Workers of Humayun Kabir’s party did this,” one of the victims claimed to have targeted the violence, as quoted by ANI.
