Public school enrollment in New York City is expected to decline, reflecting a downward trend in its overall population since last year.
Accordingly A “Statistical Forecast” prepared for the New York City School Construction Authority projects that New York City will lose thousands of students in the 2034-35 school year.
“Enrollment is expected to be 721,251 in 2034-35, representing a decrease of 153,000 students from 2024-25,” the publication reported.

“Over the next decade, enrollment is projected to decline in each of the five boroughs. Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx are projected to experience the largest declines over the next decade, losing 45,000, 43,000, and 35,000 students, respectively.”
The projected shortfall was attributed to continued falling birth rates, migration of residents, and an aging population. “The Statistical Forecast was retained by the New York City School Construction Authority (“SCA”) to perform enrollment projections for New York City Public Schools for the ten-year period beginning with the 2025-26 school year and ending in 2034-35,” the document states. The study comes at a time when New York City is facing renewed immigration.
