Kochi may see more fever casesas weather patterns change

Changing weather conditions and heavy rains cause fever cases to increase in the city. Infections such as leptospirosis and dengue fever are also reported in the region.
According to Ministry of Health statistics, a total of 9,848 fever cases were reported in the month to November 18. Of these, 9,516 were outpatient (OP) cases, while the remainder were inpatient (IP) cases. District health officials confirmed 89 dengue infections.
One of the main reasons for the consistently high number of fever cases is harsh weather conditions. Kerala State Indian Medical Association Research Cell convenor Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan said, “During the rainy season, respiratory diseases and viral fevers spread more for various reasons. People are crowded indoors, and these closed spaces facilitate the spread of respiratory viruses. Viruses remain alive in the air for a longer time when humidity increases, as in the rainy season.”
“Fever is often caused by various respiratory viruses. Among them, the influenza virus can cause serious symptoms that can be fatal in rare cases, but serious consequences can be prevented through vaccination. Older adults, in particular, should consider getting vaccinated against flu,” he added.
He added that in addition to washing hands to remove viruses from fingertips, an effective way to prevent the spread of the disease is to take time off from work or school when a fever occurs. “Students should not be sent to school if they have a fever. This simple precaution can help limit further spread in the community,” he said.
As many as 16,169 fever cases were recorded in the district in October, including 15,636 OP cases and the remaining IP cases. The district also reported the highest number of dengue cases in the state and two deaths were recorded. This marks an increase compared to September, when the region recorded a total of 533 suspected and confirmed cases, including 138 confirmed dengue infections and 395 suspected cases.
