The book, signed by Sir Paul McCartney, was sold at auction for nearly £1,000 after being donated to the Oxfam charity.

Donated as part of a 1970s memorabilia collection, the book sat unnoticed in the store for months before manager Joan Randle noticed the valuable inscription.

It was later sold at auction with Bonhams, raising £950 for Oxfam.

“The book had actually been sitting on the shelf for several months alongside a lot of memorabilia from the 1970s,” Ms Randle said.

“I was planning to use some of the items in a fun window display, so it wasn’t something we paid particular attention to at first.

“One afternoon, I realized I had some free time and decided to wade through the pile. It was one of the last things I looked at.

“I couldn’t believe it when I opened the book and saw Paul McCartney’s signature… It was one of the best moments of the 10 years I worked at the store.”

The inside front cover of the book is signed by Sir Paul in black ballpoint pen and reads: “Best wishes! To you!”

Oxfam staff have so far been unable to trace the donor.

An Oxfam spokesman said: “This is a great example of how a single donation can make a real difference.

“We launched an urgent appeal following the devastating earthquake in Venezuela and every donation made to our stores helps ensure Oxfam can respond when communities around the world face disasters.

“We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who donates to Oxfam. Whether it’s a signed collectible, a beloved book or an everyday item, every donation and every sale helps us be there for people when they need it most.”
